Ribosomes

Ribosomes are non - membranous, extremely small, round bodies found either in the free state in the cytoplasm or attached to the surface of the ER. They are composed of ribonucleoprotein. (ribonucleic acid and protein).

 A ribosome is a cellular particle made of RNA and protein that serves as the site for protein synthesis in the cell. The ribosome reads the sequence of the messenger RNA (mRNA) and, using the genetic code, translates the sequence of RNA bases into a sequence of amino acids.

Functions of Ribosomes:-

  • The main function of ribosome’s is to act as a platform or work place for the synthesis of proteins. Hence they are called "Protein Factory".
  • Ribosomes are composed of about equal amounts of RNA (ribonucleic acid), and proteins.
